What if Tokyo becomes a forest?

The population in Japan is decreasing, and the population is aging faster in cities. In Ukraine, 30 years after the Chernobyl disaster, the exclusion zone became a forest where wild animals thrive. Considering the foreseen scenarios of our future technologies, such as remote medical treatment, flying cars, driverless buses, and AI-operated white-collar jobs, the definition of convenience may no longer be based on location.

This immersive interdisciplinary Wintersession Travel Course is for art and design students interested in exploring past and current efforts to conserve biodiversity in Southern Africa while also developing their communication and documentation skills.

This 35-day Wintersession Travel Course is based in and near the Bears Ears National Monument. The first-ever Indigenous-led National Monument has roots in the five-tribal coalition which asserted their tribal sovereignty and established a living cultural landscape that has been part of several tribes and their culture, language, history, and identity. The Bears Ears has temporal elements of the contemporary present, past, and future for tribal nations and Indigenous communities. It is a landmark win in the struggle to protect ancestral sacred lands and push back against climate change and progressive conservation of public lands stewardship.
