Call for Faculty: RISD + Hyundai Collaborative Studio, Spring 2020

Posted: September 24, 2019

The Office of the Associate Provost for Research and Strategic Partnerships in collaboration with the Office of the Vice Provost and RISD Global is excited to announce a new partnership with Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) to support a studio that aligns with RISD’s pursuit of new ways of making and knowing and sustainable futures.

RISD + HYUNDAI Collaborative Studio funding will support full exploration of the topic through studio experimentation, travel, and exhibition, including:

  • Research stipends for both faculty leaders ($2,500 per faculty)
  • A dedicated graduate assistant for the studio
  • Research stipends for all participating students ($750 per student)
  • Two visits for faculty to Seoul, South Korea: once as part of planning visit, and a second time with students and as part of the Studio component
  • Engagement of external visiting experts to augment the student learning as part of the studio.
  • A culminating exhibition on RISD’s campus
  • A publication produced with the support of a graduate assistant
To help organize the Spring 2020 studio, an HMG team will visit RISD October 7-9th to learn more about RISD’s campus, meet with potential faculty leaders for the collaborative studio, and refine the broad topic through think tank sessions that include a panel of RISD and non-RISD experts on the topic.

The selected faculty will conduct a pre-visit to HMG’s Headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, as convenient in the Fall, to better contextualize and understand HMG’s concerns and practices vis-à-vis the broad studio topic.

In addition, it is the mutual hope of RISD and HYUNDAI that the exhibition will travel in some form to a location in Seoul, South Korea, to be mutually determined after the end of the Collaborative Studio.

DEADLINE: Application review will begin September 30, 2019. The call will remain open until filled. Please click the link below to apply.
