This three-week course brings together artistic practice that is inspired by great literature and study of Dante Alighieri’s 14th century poem, L’Inferno—an enduring model for our conception of Hell. Taught in Rome at Palazzetto Cenci, with trips to Orvieto, Assisi and Dante’s home city of Florence, the class will include lectures by Dante scholars, critical dialogue with knowledgeable guest artists, and tours of relevant historical and cultural sites. Students will embark on study of the canticle and will define an independent problem in response to the poem, which will culminate in a three-part project. The course will conclude with an exhibition of student work in Rome.
