About this Travel Course

This course taught the painting techniques of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The techniques included gilding, pure egg-yolk tempera, combined methods of oil and tempera and painting with oil glazes. For the first three weeks of Wintersession, students worked in Providence, followed by a twelve-day trip to Florence, Italy, during which time students were able to examine first-hand relevant art and consider art historical issues related to growth and development of these techniques. This trip included three days in Rome and visits to Assisi and Siena.
