About UdK

The language of instruction in almost all courses at UDK is German. International applicants must demonstrate their knowledge of German at the time of application (intermediate/upper intermediate language-level required, B1).

If you speak German you will generally find life in Berlin easier. While many people speak English, knowledge of German helps you to feel more comfortable and settle in quicker.

The UdK Berlin offers German language classes at beginner level to its exchange students. These classes are free of charge, and run twice a week in 2 groups. You may take part in one or both classes. With regular participation you can obtain up to 4 ECTS (2 RISD credits).

Academic Credits

UdK utilizes the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to award academic credit for coursework. For transfer to RISD, 2 ECTS is equivalent to 1 RISD credit.

Department and Courses

For more information about the Design department, click here for general information and here for course information.

Course Selection

The UdK encourages students to come up with their own portfolio of course selections, also granting interdisciplinary freedom if choice. Since seats are numbered, practice is often 'first come – first serve’. Incoming exchange students should be ready to present themselves with a brief digital portfolio on site. Registration for core classes, i. e. studio classes, takes place just when the semester starts. Based on the incoming student’s interest, enrollment to the respective core class happens on the stop within a personal interview situation.

Apply for Global Exchange & AICAD

The entire application process will be completed using an online application portal. Apply the semester before you plan to attend.
