Some English instruction
The number of courses offered in English is constantly increasing, however the primary language of instruction is German. Please check the language of instruction for your desired courses in advance.
German proficiency is required for courses taught in German. While not mandatory, some German proficiency is highly recommended even for students who are only taking courses held in English in order to fully participate in the wider community and student life.
TUM offers German language courses for international students.

To use the course catalogue, choose the desired language in the top right hand corner (de/en) then select «Courses» in the search bar and click on «Advanced Search». Selecting «English» as the language of instruction will give you a list of all courses offered in English in a given semester.
Academic Course Load
You are required to enroll in the equivalent of 12 RISD credits (24 ECTS) while on exchange. Note: 60% of exchange students’ TUM study load must be completed within your main TUM host department.
Accommodation in Munich is scarce and competition for housing high. TUM Global can assist with recommendations. Learn more about accommodation at TUM
TUMinternational (or TUMi for short) is the orientation and support program for new international and exchange students at TUM. TUMi provides support for new international students at the beginning of their studies in Munich and offers a comprehensive program of cultural activities throughout the semester.
All TUMi activities are conducted by collegiate tutors. Many of them are internationally experienced or have an international background. This enables them to put themselves in the position of new students at TUM.
The entire application process will be completed using an online application portal. Apply the semester before you plan to attend.
